Pharmaceutical pollution alters salmon migration
Current Biology · Primary field telemetry; benzoylecgonine group up to 1.9× farther per week and 12.3 km farther.
Kya tumhe pata hai ki scientists ne research ke liye literally salmons ko cocaine diya? Aur main serious hoon.
What this reel claims
Environmentally realistic pharmaceutical exposure can alter juvenile salmon movement in the wild.
The benzoylecgonine group travelled up to 1.9 times farther per week and up to 12.3 km farther during parts of the study.
Evidence behind the story
Current Biology · Primary field telemetry; benzoylecgonine group up to 1.9× farther per week and 12.3 km farther.
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences · Institutional account of the field experiment and uncertainty.
What didn’t fit
This was not a tank of implausibly drugged fish. Researchers used slow-release implants and acoustic telemetry under real river conditions. The metabolite benzoylecgonine produced the clearest movement effect. That distinction matters because collapsing parent drug and metabolite into one result turns statistical uncertainty into certainty. The stronger story is about pharmaceutical residues as ecological actors: a chemical need not kill an animal to change migration timing and geometry.
